The 12 astrology houses explained in plain English. Learn what each house rules, from self and money to love, career and spirituality, in your chart.
The astrology houses are the “where” of a chart: if the planets are the “what” and the signs are the “how”, the houses show where it all happens. Your chart is divided into twelve houses, each linked to an area of everyday life. The planets in each house show where that energy tends to show up for you.
The houses depend on your birth time and place. The 1st house begins at your Rising sign, and the rest follow around the chart. Our calculator uses whole-sign houses, a simple and ancient system in which each house is one complete sign.
Here is a quick reference you can use while reading any chart.
You have ten planets and twelve houses, so some houses will always be empty. An empty house is not a missing part of your life. Look at the sign on the house and the planet that rules that sign to understand it.
The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses are called angular houses. Planets here tend to be more visible and active in your life, because they sit close to the four main points of the chart: Ascendant, IC, Descendant and Midheaven.
