Zodiac elements made simple: the fire, earth, air and water signs, plus the cardinal, fixed and mutable modalities, and what your balance says about you.
The zodiac elements are fire, earth, air and water, and every sign belongs to one of them and to one of three modalities. Together they form a quick shorthand for a sign’s character. Counting how many of your planets fall in each element is a simple way to see the overall flavour of your chart.
The elements describe a sign’s basic temperament.
The modalities, also called qualities, describe how a sign uses its energy.
Signs of the same element usually understand each other easily. Fire and air feed each other, as do earth and water. Signs of the same modality can either work brilliantly together or clash, because they share the same way of handling energy.
Count the elements of your Sun, Moon, Rising and personal planets. A lot of one element shows a strong theme. A missing element is not a weakness; it often becomes something you seek out in friends, partners or hobbies.

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are fire; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are earth; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are air; Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are water.
Same-element pairs connect easily. Fire works well with air, and earth works well with water.
You may feel drawn to people or activities with that element's qualities. It is a theme to develop, not a flaw.
